HOUSTON'S 90.1 KPFT / NEW DAY PACIFICA SUPPORTERS committed a WHITEWASH & BIPOC ERASURE.

This website is here to lead the fight. Read the data, know the faces, and take action against white supremacy.

UPDATE

We have been hearing rumors of a departure of a key staff member but until we receive confirmation we will refrain from posting.

That said, please remember two things:

- The work here is not about one person; it is about a structure. We are fighting a system, not a symptom.

- We use facts and historical analysis as our weapons. We do not use threats or violence because we don't need it. Anyone insinuating otherwise is lying.

UPDATE:

A bylaws referendum to replace the current bylaws with a new set of bylaws has been proposed by a group of Pacifica members. The referendum did not pass as it failed to garner majority vote “yes” for staff and listener voters. As a result, the current bylaws stay in place.

What does this mean?

New Day Pacifica supporters benefitted from the erasure of BIPOC Voices and the KPFT Whitewash. Even when asked and confronted, NDP had no comment.

BIPOC Voices that were eliminated all supported the No vote. Was a Yes vote a way to secure your show?

The new bylaws would have decreased local control of our stations and centralized power.

Check Pacifica Democracy Project for more info and updates on this move. Let's be clear; this is a victory for representation.

Who Are We?

We're not this picture here; otherwise our shows would still be on air.

We represent Houston's marginalized, Space City's under represented, H-Town's forgotten. It sounds hyperbolic but look at the facts, the data, the actual sequence of events and it's clear : 90.1 KPFT was whitewashed and committed BIPOC erasure.

But don't take my or anyone's word for it; check the facts.

Let's Make a Few Things Clear:

This part here is really BS & on here for the detractors who want to "shoot the messenger".  It's basically here to explain to people who want to dismiss it for X Y Z reason and ignore the white supremacy in play.

Skip this to go straight to the racism.

We know people will counter these facts with their version of "alternative facts" and we welcome that; however, white supremacist tactics, obfuscation, gaslighting, sealioning, or any other method the oppressor uses will not prevail as we have truth and history on our side.

More importantly, we have receipts in the forms of email trails, show listings, timelines, audio recordings, and data.

Lastly, if you are more offended by the tone and language of this website than the ACTUAL racism that is taking place, then you're a part of the problem as well. Respectability politics left the door when our voices were erased.

The data has been compiled with a validity of 93% (average)

If the data is not validated, it's not included. Therefore, the stats reflect known data points. 93% means that out of 100 data points, 93 were verified and included in the study, which means only 7% isn't accounted for. 93% for the study is average, so some fields have smaller and larger MMVs. The lower the MMV, the better the dataset.

If a piece of data is incorrect, feel free to email me. I'm more than happy to correct it. Outliers here and there won't change this significantly but increasing the validity of this data is always welcomed.

The data was verified through known attributes and accounts for intersectionality.

Race, ethnicity, gender, and orientation are fluid; this intersectionality makes exact quantification difficult and is noted in any study within these parameters. That said, the best efforts have been noted and explained; these notes are included in the summary.

For example, when shows had a male and female host, I made room in the data for that.

It is very rare to have 100% in any datasets. Sets of 80% and above are considered above average.

No disrespect is intended in this study towards groups not included.

With such intersectionality, the statistics are very basic and do not include every single group. This is not intended as oversight or disrespect; our intention here is not to highlight our collective groups but to demonstrate the white oppression occurring. Therefore, w/ simplification, comes some omission.

I apologize if there is any offense taken but know that justice for all is the goal and that the BIPOC community supports everyone.

The station lineup has changed slightly since June 6th, 2021.

This data is accurate and represents the state of 90.1 KPFT as of May 24th, 2021 (the OLD SCHEDULE), May 25th, 2021 (PROPOSED / IMPLEMENTED), and June 6th, 2021 (ACTUAL). Since then, some small changes have taken place. However, the main charge still persists.

Lastly, I'm not gonna bust my ass and keep updating the information due to the mediocrity of a General Manager who is incapable of acceptable solutions and good communication.

You want an update?

Do the work.

Purpose of the Report

The purpose of this report is to:

- highlight the lack of representation at KPFT prior to the hiring of the the new GM as compared to Houston's demographics; KPFT was already doing a poor job of community radio

- illustrate the widening of the gap the GM's proposed changes would have, which were planned without consultation of BIPOC hosts, programmers, or producers affected.

- show the miniscule changes made that sustain the changes that have resulted in less representation for women & BIPOC communities, as shown by the data.

- prove the program changes have benefitted three categories, as undeniably demonstrated by the data: white, male, and New Day Pacifica supporters.

Houston Demographics
For Race / Ethnicity

As mentioned before, intersectionality is present in all race / ethnicity data. Afro Latinos, people of mixed descent, self identity, all play a role. Thus, racial & ethnic breakdowns can be difficult to measure due to the various definitions, intersectionality, and cultural distinctions.

For this analysis, we broke it down to White, Black, Latino, Asian, Indigenous / Other. Latino as it relates within white demos, Afro-Latinidad, and other intersectional groups is separated.

The data is pulled from http://tiny.cc/USCensusData

This is the base for our comparison when it comes to representation; if KPFT truly believes in Pacifica's Mission Statement, it should represent the community it serves. You'll see this pie chart repeated throughout so you can compare the pie charts.

This particular data set is derived from an average of 91.3% which makes this an excellent representation of the data as a whole.

Breakdown for All Hours

All Hours
Distribution, Old

Comparison of all shows
24 Hours, 7 Days a Week.

The chart above demonstrates the breakdown of KPFT's representation for the entire schedule. This is the best representation of all the charts for representation yet it still is tiny. This includes weekend hours, and midnight hours.

As the hours become more optimal, the representation lessens.

All Hours Distribution, Proposed

In every chart for the Proposed Schedule changes, you'll see there is a massive spike in white representation (as well as male & queer, but that'll come up later). It's evident in every chart when it comes to the Proposed Schedule, without fail.

The Proposed Schedule was installed. KPFT had this for nearly two weeks, installing some minor changes.

Don't be fooled; any of the changes were b/c BIPOC spoke up, not because of a sudden change of heart. Adding insult to injury, the changes don't even go back to prior levels.

All Hours
Distribution, Actual

Comparison of all shows
24 Hours, 7 Days a Week

In the 24 hour / 7 day chart, you can see white representation goes from 56.3%, to 75.8% to 68.3%.

It's the same curve every time; the base is already bad (OLD SCHEDULE), gets incredibly worse (PROPOSED/IMPLEMENETD SCHEDULE), then lessens (ACTUAL SCHEDULE) but still worse off than we began.

You're kicked in the shins, then you get kicked in the face several times, then they stop and start kicking you in the chest and tell you "it's getting better, we're doing the best we can." WTF?

Breakdown for Weekday Hours

Weekday Hours
Distribution, Old

Comparison of all shows
24 Hours, 5 Days a Week.

Weekday hours are seen are as more favorable and you already see here that white representation, before any changes were made, was already over represented, even more so than the 24/7 Schedule demographics.

Again, as the hours become more optimal, BIPOC representation lessens.

Weekday Hours Distribution, Proposed

Black & Latino representation is cut in half from it's previous slices. More than 80% of the the weekday hours are held by white hosts.

4 out of every 5 hours, you will not hear a BIPOC voice.

Where is the community in that? What is the goal with this?

Weekday Hours
Distribution, Actual

White representation starts at 59%, increases to 80.9%, then drops to 71.2%, which is a net 12.2% percent increase.

In Pacifica's & KPFT's Mission Statement, it says ". . . to employ such varied sources in the public presentation of accurate, objective, comprehensive news on all matters vitally affecting the community."

How is KPFT accomplishing that?

Breakdown for Primetime Hours

Primetime Hour Distribution Shift, Old

Comparison of all shows M-F from 7AM-7PM

The chart above demonstrates the breakdown of KPFT's representation; compare this 66% representation of white led / centric shows to to Houston's 24.6% actual representation from before.

So prior to any changes, Houston's Community Station was not representing Houston.

The problem pre existed the current GM. Then it got worse.

Primetime Hour Distribution Shift, Proposed

In perhaps one of the most remarkable pieces of data, the General Manager of 90.1 KPFT proposed and implemented a schedule where only 5% of KPFT's Primetime hours were devoted to BIPOC voices.

Think about that.

In the 12 hours of prime time programming, the General Manager proposed devoting 36 minutes to BIPOC voices.

That's 3 minutes an hour.

How does that represent Houston's community?

Primetime Hour Distribution, Actual

Comparison of all shows M-F from 7AM-7PM

As you see, the new schedule somehow managed to find additional BIPOC shows to cancel / change / replace and increase white representation during prime time to at KPFT to an astounding 87.4%.

Who decided this?

Why was programming shifted to music, namely more Triple AAA oriented music at the expense of Pacifica's Mission Statement & BIPOC Voices?

Breakdown Demographic Comparison

KPFT Demographic Comparison, Old

The charts above reflect the the difference in percentage of representation on KPFT when compared to Houston's demographics.

All BIPOC communities were poorly reflected by KPFT except Indigenous communities.

I need to note it is laughable to suggest they are over represented; Indigenous communities represented 100% of America until manifest destiny / white supremacy eradicated their communities.

In Houston, about .3% of the population identifies as American Indian / Alaska Native which leads to the "over representation" on this chart.

KPFT Demographic Comparison, Proposed

Consequently,  Indigenous representation (as well as Latino representation) was slashed to zero representation during Primetime hours.

In fact, every community had its' representation slashed except one. Can you guess which one?

A quote from an interview the General Manager had with OutSmart Magazine:

“Leadership is not about being in charge. Leadership is about taking care of those in your charge. There is a huge difference between a boss and a leader.”

Who are you taking care of?

KPFT Demographic Comparison, Actual

The data speaks for itself.

It would be naïve, ignorant, even maliciously malfeasant to suggest that such erasure was simply a matter of luck and happenstance.

Is increasing white representation by sheer coincidence, dumb luck, or part of New Day Pacifica's plan?

Is this New Day Pacifica's plan with other stations?

Houston Demographics
For Gender

Gender breakdowns can be difficult to measure due to the various definitions, intersectionality, etc.

For this analysis, we broke it down to Male & Female; the intention is not meant to discriminate non binary folx.

https://www.infoplease.com/us/census/texas/houston/demographic-statistics

For this analysis, hosts and programming identification was based on stated identities whenever possible & show centricity.

This particular data set is derived from an average of 94.7% which is an excellent representation of the data set as a whole.

Gender Breakdown

Total Hours Distribution

Comparison of all shows, 24/7, in re: to the Old, Proposed, and Actual Schedule.

Oh, you thought this was just about racism and not the patriarchy that also exists?

Houston is evenly split yet male representation is still high. As noted above, 3/4 shows were male led / centric shows. Female representation lessened overall, from 24% to now 21%.

Weekday Hours Distribution

Total Hours, Weekday, and Primetime distribution were all roughly the same lousy 24% in the old schedule.

However, the cuts in the proposed schedule and the actual schedule cut woman led / centric shows almost by half.

Weekday distribution is the only area where the bell curve noted didn't hold through. In this case, the cuts went down on all three. That's not an improvement.

Primetime Hours Distribution

If you recall, 87.4% of the primetime hours were led by white hosts, In primetime, men hold 86% of the primetime slots.

Therefore, there is a huge likelihood that, at any time during primetime, you have a 3/4 chance that the show is led by a white male.

Is this what is meant by Houston's Community Station?

Houston Demographics
For Orientation

Gender breakdowns can be difficult to measure due to the various definitions, intersectionality, and lack of recognizable expression. For this analysis, the categories used were Straight & Queer;  again, the intention is not meant to discriminate against the gender identities but to demonstrate individual bias.

For this analysis, hosts and programming identification was based on stated identities whenever possible & show centricity. This particular data set is derived from an average of 76.4%, which is considered good.

Orientation Breakdown

Total Hours Distribution

On every chart, the bars stand for the old schedule, the proposed schedule, and the actual schedule, from left to right.

Representation for our queer community has been level with the community it serves. The proposed schedule did show a spike in representation but it has been brought back to similar levels as before.

Weekday Hours Distribution

Weekday hours representation was at 3.5% in the old schedule and proposed to 14.4%, finally landing at 4.46%.

The distribution shows a representation that is representative to the community.

Representation during prime time has remained as is and is representative as well.

Primetime Hours Distribution

The inclusion of these stats are not intended to criticize or highlight the representation of our queer community.

The inclusion here is to demonstrate the individual bias and failure to acknowledge that lens; a lens that  somehow marginalizes BIPOC communities but keeps or elevates the communities that lens resides in.

An individual bias that maintained or increased the representation of his identity.

New Day Pacifica Complicity in BIPOC Erasure

New Day Pacifica Role in BIPOC Erasure

The staff, programmers, or hosts that have benefitted from the BIPOC Erasure have not commented on their role, have not commented on the changes, and have not acknowledged that their programming, whether implicit or explicit, means they are complicit and support the KPFT Whitewash.

It's a heavy charge, not to be thrown lightly. However, here's what we found.

OK, But Where's the Connection?

The email grab before and above show who supports New Day Pacifica.

It was stuninng to see that of the shows listed, nearly all of them remained on FM, and in many instances received improved  or more air time.

But before we get to the number, imagine being a listed supporter like Egberto Willies but your show is not even listed.

Or worse, in line with the Jane Fonda fiasco, NDP lists shows that aren't on the air at KPFT. (The Veteran's Show)

New Day Pacifica is KPFT's Whitewash

Of the remaining shows, 83% of the shows listed benefitted from the schedule changes.

Of the people listed, 87% of the people with shows on 90.1 KPFT benefitted from the schedule changes.

Was cooperation in the KPFT Whitewash needed to secure your show?

Did supporting New Day Pacifica ensure BIPOC communities were sacrificed for NDP agents?

Is New Day Pacifica racist?

Amendment

The inclusion of  Roots Radio on the list of NDP Supporters

New Day Pacifica in it's emails included Roots Radio as a supporter.

Rudy Martin, former host of Roots Radio, wrote the following:

"I am a definite ally of the BIPOC movement and tried to get my endorsement removed but they didn't do so. I am appalled at what the data shows."

After discussion, I removed Roots Radio form the list of NDP Supporters

As a website dedicated to truth, I want to disclose any instance of correction or update to people's positions so I am transparent on this and will continue to do so.

Conclusion of the Report

The exhaustive data concludes by centering the initial purpose:

- highlight the lack of representation at KPFT prior to the hiring of the the new GM as compared to Houston's demographics; KPFT was already doing a poor job of community radio

- - In every demographic, except queer representation, representation was poor at KPFT, which bills itself as "Houston's Community Radio."

- illustrate the widening of the gap the GM's proposed changes would have, which were planned without consultation of BIPOC hosts, programmers, or producers affected.

- - The proposed changes, as sent via email to programmers on Tue, May 25, 6:58 PM, were devastating to BIPOC representation.

- show the miniscule changes made that sustain the changes that have resulted in less representation for women & BIPOC communities, as shown by the data.

- - The actual schedule has not done remotely enough to not only restore what little representation there was but also increase representation to appropriate levels.

- prove the program changes have benefitted three categories, as undeniably demonstrated by the data: white, male, queer, and beneficial to New Day Pacifica supporters.

This is the Data...
... these are the Voices.

The changes were done without input, without a reason, and without communication. The shows below were relegated to HD2, replaced, repositioned, or even removed.

Actions - What Can You Do?

Click on the links below in the menu and get to know more on the what has happened at KPFT, from the claims, the emails, the reaction from KPFT Staff, the KPFT Board, but more importantly, the people who make up the BIPOC Voices at KPFT.

These aren't just numbers... they are people who care about the communities they serve.
